MiaoYu Youth Deaf Rehabilitation Center

Beijing, China

About the School

MiaoYu is a public welfare initiative founded by a dedicated hearing and speech rehabilitation teacher. The center provides essential support to children aged 3–16 who face significant challenges, including children in difficult circumstances, de facto orphans, and those from extremely impoverished single-parent families in urgent need of rehabilitation training.

MiaoYu offers professional rehabilitation training and speech correction services free of charge to these children, while also covering their living and dining expenses. This initiative not only serves as a targeted poverty alleviation effort but also empowers children with disabilities by helping them integrate more easily into mainstream preschools and schools after rehabilitation.

Sustained by the generosity of caring individuals and organizations, MiaoYu has remained committed to its mission. As of November 2021, the center had supported the rehabilitation of 36 disadvantaged children. Currently, 14 children with various disabilities—including hearing impairments, autism, speech disorders, blindness, and physical disabilities—are undergoing training. These children come from diverse regions across China, including Hebei, Henan, Zhejiang, Fujian, Shandong, and Sichuan’s Liangshan region, and represent multiple ethnic groups.

As a grassroots initiative, MiaoYu relies entirely on donations from individuals and businesses to sustain its operations and provide life-changing support to children in need.

Meet the MiaoYu Students

Friendship with WAB

The partnership between MiaoYu Youth Deaf Rehabilitation Center and the Western Academy of Beijing (WAB) has blossomed into a heartwarming exchange of cultures, languages, and friendships. These monthly exchanges of letters not only help MiaoYu students practice their communication skills but also allow WAB students to learn about Deaf culture and develop a deeper sense of empathy and understanding.

Beyond the letter exchanges, WAB students are extending their impact by creating activity books designed specifically for Deaf youth. These books include engaging, inclusive activities that celebrate creativity and promote learning. As a special gesture for Chinese New Year, WAB students plan to distribute these activity books not only to MiaoYu students but also to other Deaf schools in Beijing.
